Anyone Excited about IndyCar?

I took this shot at the same corner later in the race.

Funny story. These guys came from Sweeden to support Marcus Ericsson. I took this photo on Saturday while they were watching Marcus in qualifying. When I came back to my hotel on Saturday night. They were staying in the same hotel a few doors down from my room.

Great that IndyCar has fans like this!

A decent race that underscored the problem with street circuits - "racing between the walls". One driver makes a mistake, a half dozen cars are involved because there's nowhere to go. In this race three incidents took out about a third of the field, ridiculous. A completely preventable incident took out the leaders; exiting the pits on cold tires you let the traffic go, and you certainly don't try to outbrake the leader when he's on warm tires and you are on cold. Either a stupid mistake or an "if I can't win you won't either" move. At least an "avoidable contact" penalty was levied on Penske (I was surprised).

He never tried to outbake the leader because he was the leader and has every right to take what line he wants, he never moved under braking or anything.
Cold tyres out of pits first turn, wow, yes sometimes things happen, car slides a bit wide, amazing.
Scott is not a dirty driver, never was never will be.
The problem at Saint Pete was setups and packages went out the window because of resurfacing and new bumps.
From first practice to the last race every series there were big incidents.

Now watch the year before.
From the very first T1 you can see how much more stable the cars are virtually every corner, lap one is like they are on rails.

"First and foremost, I'm very sorry to Romain," said McLaughlin.
"He's a friend of mine and I know we were both going for the win there. I just made a bit mistake.
"I tried to push on cold tyres and I just didn't have the grip on the inside there like I did on the soft compound tyres.
"Locked the rears and unfortunately we made wheel contact and it just took us both out.
"I don't race like that. I apologize. I feel like I've had plenty of good battles with many good drivers.

The point is not whether he was a leader or not, the point is he pushed the cold tires too hard by braking too late and too hard and had the balance too much to the rear. All that caused them to lock and slide into Grosjean. His fault 100%. He tried to fight for the win with a weapon that wasnt ready to do battle. He took a gamble and lost.

If he was the leader how did he hit the other car in the side?
Scott comes out of the pits ahead on track.
For someone to take the lead they must be 1/2 a car length in front.
At best Roman got level by the time they touched.

If you asked the other drivers they would have done the same thing and tried to defend their 1st place no matter what or they are telling lies. T
Scott " Oh I might out brake myself and hit him so I just let him pass" If you thought like that no team would give you a drive.

Then should have been easy for Roman to think " wait a minute he is on cold tyres, if I go outside he might drift wide and hit me, I better wait. Of course he doesn't, nor should he.

It is still a stupid noob type move to exit the pits on cold tires and try going neck and neck with the leader on warm tires, and even more stupid to try continuing into a turn. He deserved the "avoidable contact" penalty. (I wouldn't have done it and I was often chastised for being overly aggressive.)

Um, did you see lap 36 when Scott exited pits the first time? It was basically exactly the same scenario and the same drivers and it worked.

100% Scott deserves the penalty, but Romain lost out last time and got pushed to marbles... Super risky to try to go around the outside, especially considering how hard Scott when in tight at that corner last time? maybe Romain could have yielded that corner and tried again a different spot?

I really would have loved it if it was a 1-2 finish with these two drivers in either order actually so I was gutted with this outcome. If only Scott didn't have traffic on his in-lap the racing gods could have avoided this.

Last year was a great series, Plenty of drivers in contention throughout the season and plenty of entertaining races.

And this year started with a bang...

Don't want to harp but if you watch both 30 minute replays you can see just how much rougher the track conditions were this year. In every series they had big punts, the 2nd GT race had barely a handful of green laps, when GTs don't grip and throw themselves into walls you really know somethings not right.

Hmmm, well, there was three of them in the race , which is awesome by itself.

But have removed the reference.

Thank you, sorry for being abrupt.

In Australia I was still waiting for a link to the race Monday afternoon, we celebrate News Years first but get race weekend last. lol

It took ages of complaining to get RD to remove race spoiling photos and comment in the news.
Now people can't wait to add winners to the news feed so I link RD to the forum page instead so I won't see it.

In race threads better to leave it for a few days just in case ;)
