Escape key not working in VR

I recently acquired a VR headset. Great, except the "Escape" key won't exit a driving session and bring up the in-game menu (car adjustments, results, replay, resume, etc.). The only way to leave a session is take off headset and close SteamVR, which then in-turn closes Assetto Corsa completely. This makes Assetto with VR useless for me, as can't work on set ups, etc.
I appreciate it if anyone has found a solution to this issue

Why don't you use Alt F4, or map that combination to a button, or use In-game Keyboard Shortcuts Extension which uses Alt E or define whatever key or key combination you want in settings / controls / system (Content Manager)?

I have mapped alternative buttons to the "pause race" command, i.e. mapped to Esc, and the mapped keys don't work either.

That sounds like what happens when i try to run the game in windowed mode while using vr. If i set it to run in full screen, it's fine. Good luck!

Can you please explain what you mean by "run it in full screen?" How would I do that? I don't know my way around SteamVR, Microsoft mixed reality, etc. all too confusing. detailed guidance appreciated

In Content Manager go to
Settings>Assetto Corsa>Video and tick the box next to Fullscreen.

unfortunately that is already ticked and it is still an issue

Could it be that your game is loosing focus? Have you tried clicking on the screen with your mouse and then pressing ESC?

I had this problem, the cause was switching from oculus rift to openVR in monitor settings. Once I put it back to oculus rift it all worked again.
