UPDATE: MOZA Direct Drive Wheel Bundle & FSR Formula Wheel Announced

MOZA Racing announced today a very affordable direct drive wheel base, wheel and pedals bundle retailing for only $599 and another new product to their ecosystem: the FSR Formula Wheel.

Update: Unfortunately MOZA Racing has decided, by giving affiliate partners such as ourselves a last minute notice, to cancel all Discount Codes with immediate effect. This means our beloved premium members are not longer able to purchase MOZA Racing goods with the promised 5% discounted rate anymore. We are not happy with MOZA's approach and timing as this gives us no more room to adapt and inform our users properly.

The entry level DD market was pretty much dominated last year by the Fanatec CSL DD wheelbase, but the MOZA R5 Wheel Base undercuts the price of the German company with a hundred bucks and adds pedals and a wheel on top. As our YouTuber Jermaine Smit already said to me after reviewing the R5 bundle for our channel: "Black Friday and Christmas have come early this year!"

The new MOZA products aim to satisfy both newcomers to direct drive wheels as well as veterans who are looking for a top-of-the-line wheel.

R5 Direct Drive Wheel Base

The R5 Wheelbase is MOZA’s newest entry-level direct drive wheelbase, with 5.5Nm of torque. It sports a similar, sleek black design to the R9, but with a smaller compact form.

The R5 bundle comes with a new wheel from MOZA. The ES wheel is a leather-rim wheel, sporting MOZA’s signature flow lights, quick release system and configurable buttons through MOZA’s software suite called MOZA Pit House.

Including in the bundle is a new set of SR-P Lite Pedals. These are an all-steel, lightweight revision of MOZA’s existing SR-P pedals. The pedals still feature flexibility and adjustability, minus the SR-P load cell brake system.

Are you curious to experience DD simulators but on a tight budget?
The R5 retails for only $599 USD, including the wheelbase, desk clamp, wheel, and pedals, representing the best direct drive package at this price point.

FSR Formula Wheel

The FSR Formula Wheel is MOZA’s newest premium wheel. It expands on the success of the GS GT Wheel, with a full carbon fiber frame and 4.3” HD screen featuring 15 different UI interfaces. It is 280mm in width, and sports perforated leather for the grips.

The FSR features an optional USB connection for increased compatibility. It also includes additional buttons on the wheel to ensure drivers can make any adjustment needed on the fly.

The new FSR Formula Wheel retails for $649 USD and is compatible with all MOZA wheelbases.

Mike Smith has reviewed the FSR Formula Wheel for us and a report will be published on RaceDepartment.com in the coming days. Stay tuned.

Decent entry level kit. For me it's not lust worthy. For someone getting into the hobby with $600, the kit is probably the best direction to take. Getting an upgrade in FFB takes getting a new wheelbase.
I wouldn't call it a Fanatec Killer though. Fanatec's pricing and quality control are the real Fanatec killer.

The FSR Steering wheel is interesting. Pretty nicely priced.

Back from Fanatec's website...
This R5 bundle is only $10 (ish) cheaper than a 5NM CSL-DD build if you add a CSL Clutch kit. Without the clutch kit, the CSL-DD build is cheaper by about $30.00.

- CSL-DD (5NM) $349.95
-CSL BMW Rim $139.95
-CSL Pedals $79.95
-CSL Clutch kit $39.95 (optional but, probably included in Moza's kit)

(-QR1 $99.95) [How did this get here? - W.J.]

Again, the quick release on the CSL BMW is of suspicious quality, and I'd recommend replacing it as soon as possible. Ideally it would be best to order a metal QR1 on the day you are ordering the wheel rim, but that is an added $100 cost, which tilts the comparison heavily in Moza's favor. So, I'll conveniently leave that little detail out of the prices listed above.

It's a crying shame that Fanatec doesn't have a handle on its product manufacturing. If the CSL-DD was in stock and bundled with the non-italicized gear listed above, they would have something ready to go head-to-head with Moza's R5 offering. They could even make a case for the gouge-tastic Boostkit. But hitting the enemy where they are weak, is always a good strategy, and Moza seems to be well prepared.

This is going to be interesting to watch, if Fanatec gets its act together.

$599 USD is a lot of money... but when you get DD wheelbase, desk clamp, wheel, and pedals? That's tempting. Very tempting. Especially for people just starting into fancier sim racing equipment, it could be a real asset to have all the parts together in one bundle.

Like Wilko above, I'm interested to see how this plays alongside Fanatec's more affordable DD options. What an interesting time for sim racing hardware!

Thank you for the review guys.

I am actually in the target audience for this bundle 'coz I currently have a Thrustmaster TS-PC and T-LCM pedals and I would be interested in such a bundle to upgrade to DD without breaking the bank... :D

However . . . a few things make me still doubt.

For example, my current wheelbase has (slightly) more Nm than this R5, yet I don't know if I'd feel any remarkable difference, being this DD. Furthermore, the brakes are non-loadcell which is the biggest issue, also since I've invested on my current LC pedals with an extra elastomer mod for the most accurate feeling possible. On a final thought, the R5 wheel-rim looks a tad toyish (Playstation buttons?) and that, aesthethically, influences my perception of the bundle as well (especially since I currently have the Ferrari rim for the TS-PC).

I think for someone who's jumping into Simracing this is the deal of the century. But for those of us (still) looking for a well-priced DD upgrade from older belt-driven wheels I think it would be good to compare this R5 base against such products (for example Thurstmaster TS-PC / T300) instead of the low-tier Fanatec's products (hint for @Mike Smith). Because that's the hardware the audience they are catering to currently have.

My 2 cents. :coffee:

Still not sure if I would be better off spending money on brakes. Brakes are the one area I still feel I lose a load of time due to lack of feel compared to a real car.

I'm tempted but the problem is by the time the reviews from real unbiased users come out and you make a decision then everything will be sold out. Knowing my luck if I buy now then i'll get one of those 'problems to iron out' batches.

When you buy a Fanatec, you're paying for the product AND for them to paste their logo all over motorsports scene on tecpro barriers and on the steering wheels of race cars.

If you ask me, Fanatec should be focusing on their product itself instead. But who am I to say anything, most of the world are still buying up fanatect gears.

Guess what, advertisements really work. So in the end there is more money going to the company. So they can develop even more products.

If I didn't already have a Fanatec CSL DD with 3 rims, the shifter & V3 pedals (all with various upgrades) I would seriously consider this.

For now, I'll keep to my current ecosystem and hope for a Clubsport DD (12-16Nm) or maybe switch, when some of the new competitors in the DD space have fleshed out their ecosystems a bit more.
Though I most likely will pass on anything Logitech or Thrustmaster (even though the T300RS served me well for a few years)

If MOZA eventually develops their own shifter, maybe the bundle will start to make sense.

If you're gonna include a clutch pedal...
You don't need a Moza shifter. There's $100 shifters on Amazon. You can even go Logitech + USB adapter. This is meant to be used on PC which means the components don't have to be the same brand or connected to the wheelbase.
Having three pedals is absolutely a good idea for a modern bundle, shifter or not.

Hopefully they will offer the R5 separate from the pedals at least. I am looking to upgrade my rim and base but I am happy with my current load cell pedals.
hoping for the same thing here. I'm happy with the TLCM I have, and i'm putting off other wheel bases because I don't want to upgrade from my NLR001 wheel stand and it can't handle anything more than 5nm probably.

A standalone R06 would be perfect for me as well.

If I were Fanatec I would not be very worried for now, but I would keep an eye on Moza. If I were Thrustmaster I would be very worried by now. They are doing what Thrustmaster should have been doing for the last half a decade, producing a quality product at prices somehow affordable for the enthusiast regular person.

Regular people don't have the purchasing power needed to spend a similar amount of a second hand car for a glorified toy, and also that people neither want plastic toys sold to them for hundreds of euros.

Moza has understood that and Thrustmaster should be scared, Moza sell higher quality hardware with better features at a similar price point that Thrustmaster's they sell you a plastic toy with outdated tech that is overpriced because they have to pay a stupid licenses to Ferrari.

I'm very glad that Fanatec initiated a revolution with their cheap DD wheel, and now we have a new competitor that has created a new more affordable and better featured niche.

There was there a market for people expecting more quality than a toy while spending less than to purchase a used car, the other manufacturers failed to see it, or took the decision of either go to the bottom of the barrel or to the top of the high end like the graphics card manufacturers did.

Meanwhile Logitech's answer to the market evolution in the last decade and a half has been: crickets.

The one product I want from Fanatec is a Clubsport level “modern” GT style wheel. It seems to be one of the most wanted products yet all we get is the high end BMW wheel and some photos of the probably even more high end Bentley wheel. It would be great if Fanatec came out with some sort of development roadmap as there doesn’t appear to be anything much on the horizon.
